In total, there are 667 victims in the case, including those who declared that they had suffered moral harm. The amount of material claims against the defendant, according to representatives of the prosecutor's office, exceeds 40 million rubles.
According to the materials of the criminal case, on May 11, 2021, “out of hooligan motives”, Ilnaz Galyaviev attacked the school, armed with a hunting rifle and an improvised explosive device. Then he was 19 years old. Galyaviev is a graduate of the 175th gymnasium, left it after the 9th grade, later studied at the University of Management TISBI, from the fourth year of which he was expelled.
According to the materials of the investigation, the former student entered the building of the gymnasium through the main entrance, shooting several times at the guard.
Moving around the educational institution, he fired a total of about 30 shots at teachers and students.
According to regional authorities, 714 children were in the gymnasium at the time of the attack. After the message on the school radio, students of all classes locked themselves in classrooms, except for 8 “A”, where they allegedly did not hear the warning about the threat. It was the children from this class that became the main victims of Galyaviev, who burst into their office and opened fire. In addition, in the corridor near one of the classrooms, he set off an improvised explosive device, made like a fragmentation mine, stuffed with submunitions. No casualties were reported from the explosion. It is only known that the material damage caused to the educational institution is estimated at more than 1.4 million rubles.

Before the meeting, media representatives were allowed to take pictures of the accused.
Under the guns of cameras and video cameras, Galyaviev rushed around the “aquarium” shouting: “ Why are you here! Take them away!”
The defendant did not answer the journalists' questions.
Then, when the photographers and cameramen were asked to leave, the victims of the case entered the hall. There were about 30 of them. Among them was a young man walking on a prosthesis. This is one of those students who were injured jumping out of the windows of the three-story school building in a panic. Also in the hall was a guard who took the first shots. One of the victims, on behalf of the others, asked the court to make the process closed to the media, since minors are involved in it. Judge Airat Minnullin promised to consider this issue later.
In the first row, intended for the victims, sat a girl in a hijab and with a black medical mask on her face. During the identification of the participants in the process, the judge called her the sister of the defendant by the name of Karimov. The girl refused to answer questions from the media.
During the first meeting, it turned out that Alexei Vasilyev from the Chamber of Advocates of the Vologda Region entered the case as a defense counsel for the defendant by agreement. The court sent him a notice of the meeting two days before the start of the process. He replied that he “has no opportunity” to be present, and asked to begin consideration of the case without him. Prosecutor of Tatarstan Ildus Nafikov, who heads the prosecution group, reacted negatively to this, calling Mr. Vasiliev's failure to appear at the trial “unethical behavior.”
Note that Alexei Vasiliev was one of Galyaviev's lawyers during the preliminary investigation of the case. Earlier it was reported that he was hired by the parents of the accused with funds raised by the fans of the accused with the help of social networks. However, later Galyaviev signed a waiver of the services of Mr. Vasilyev, and he was provided with a defense counsel appointed by Ruslan Nuriakhmetov.
In court, Galyaviev did not object to the participation of another lawyer, although he said that he visited him only once during his stay in the Butyrka pre-trial detention center and he does not know who “invited” him now.
Despite the fact that “there is no information about the invitation of a lawyer from the court”, Judge Airat Minnullin announced a break in the session until November 15 in order to ensure the appearance of Alexei Vasiliev. Mr. Minnullin explained his decision by saying that he did not want to “cast doubt” on the forthcoming verdict of the court under the pretext of violating the right of the accused to defense. until April 18, 2023.
Note that the meeting was adjourned due to the evacuation announced in the courthouse due to a smoke signal. The premises were examined by cynologists with dogs. Resuming the process, Mr. Minnullin said that “the smoke was not confirmed.” He warned that such reports would probably continue in the future, and asked that the evacuation be treated “with understanding.”
The parents of the dead children, who were present at the trial, declined to comment. However, Amir Volkov's father, Ildar Volkov, agreed to give a short interview. He said he did not support the requirement to ban the presence of the media at meetings. Answering a question about the punishment for Galyaviev, Mr. Volkov said that he would like not only for him, but also for his nine closest relatives – in terms of the number of dead – the death penalty. “For the edification of others,” he explained.
