A scandal erupted in Saratov over the idea of renaming the “Cambridge” restaurant in the elite village of Hermes Estate. For the user of the social network, the reason for the statement was that the city of the same name in the UK and the country itself support the President of Ukraine.
While this opinion was picked up only by the regional department Alexander Yanklovich. In Samara, the campaign to change signs found support from Alexander Khinshtein, a deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation.
Background
The story began on Wednesday, when an anonymous user (the account is displayed as a dot) spread an outraged post on several Saratov tg channels. Its text is the same everywhere.
Thus, “on behalf of all the mothers of the defenders of the Fatherland and as a true patriot of their Motherland,” expressing support for the SVO, she wondered “why our city was filled with institutions and organizations that actively promote with their names the countries and cities of the states sponsoring the Ukrainian Nazis.”
– My son came on a short vacation and was shocked to find out that there is a cafe in Saratov called “Cambridge”!!! Why is there a restaurant complex with an authentic English atmosphere in the Saratov village of Dolgiy Buerak? Does the owner of this establishment know what and who is behind these letters?! she asks questions.
She goes on to talk about a certain banner with the slogan of Ukrainian nationalists that appeared at the University of Cambridge. As well as the program launched there to support Ukrainian students and scientists. The fact that 15 years ago, for the first time in the history of Britain, a transgender woman became mayor of Cambridge did not go unnoticed.
– Well, tell me, does all this have a place in the Saratov village? Cambridge has no place on the land of Saratov land! – the user is sure.
In the TG-channel “Your Heroes, Saratov”, in which the regional department Alexander Yanklovich is an active participant, she called for giving the catering establishment a “normal Russian name”.
Opinions
Even in the chat of this tg-channel, the post caused a mixed reaction. Someone supported the idea, and someone reminded that Cambridge is the fourth oldest university in the world, and its graduates were Newton, Darwin, Nabokov, Byron and many others.
By the way, we recall that the famous Soviet physicist Sergey Kapitsa lived and worked in Cambridge. And the first Russian scientist who received the Nobel, the physiologist Ivan Pavlov, was awarded an honorary doctorate from this university.
– Shall we cross out everything that was before today ??? Then how are we different from those who are now banning Tchaikovsky, Dostoevsky, Pushkin, staging Russian performances and ballets??? – one of the subscribers asks questions.
Commentators believe that one should not “go to the point of insanity” and “become a country of paranoids,” and “patriotism is not a sign” and remind that “at the entrance to Saratov, the Pentagon is standing.”
– Dear author. Does the name Cambridge bother you? Doesn’t it bother you that half of the country drives Fords, Mercedes and Renaults? Or do you not have Adidas, Nikes, etc. in your wardrobe? What is your post all about? Start with yourself in this case – do not use foreign brands – things, cars, equipment, products, chemicals and everything else. And most importantly … I am a member of the CBO, but even as a volunteer and patriot, I don’t give a damn about certain names and to some extent it’s funny to read this post of yours. Because patriotism does not consist in prohibiting everywhere and showing aggression on some kind of inscriptions. And give me some advice… my dog is an ENGLISH Cocker Spaniel. Should she be euthanized or should the breed be renamed into some old Slavic name? – Asks questions Archi.
Commentators also remind that the name of the restaurant appeared long before the CBO, and the owners should deal with its change.
Yanklovich’s opinion
Mr. Yanklovich also commented on the post, noting that he did not even know about the presence of the Cambridge restaurant in Saratov, but the subscriber “rightly noted the connection of the Anglo-Saxons with the support of Ukrnazism, which our defenders are fighting against.”
– Of course, “Cambridge”, which the subscriber wrote about, is not the only such institution, there are many more of them. But since the citizens started talking about him among the first, then it is worth starting with him. For the rest, this will be a wake-up call, – says Yanklovich.
Adding, however, that “we must not turn into barbarians, destroying everything in their path just for the reason of ideology, becoming like a goat or an unreasonable cow, which always imagines that the grass on the other side of the road is greener.”
Although in place of the entrepreneur – and not only this restaurant – the deputy changed his name and sign.
– This is a good move, for sure the institution will even have more visitors. Patriotism is now in vogue, not imitation of the Russophobic West, he stated.
Rename everything!
Other TV channels suggest that the story may also be related to the law banning foreign words in public space. Papa’s Irish Pub in Saratov has already sarcastically proposed to rename itself into “Papa’s Irish Tavern”.
– Soon to Mr. They will get Kim, demanding to rename it to “Korean shop”, The Bridge restaurant to “Saratov-Engels bridge”, Napoli pizzeria to “Pizza from some Italian city,” one of the subscribers of the “Opened / Closed” public is sure.
Commentators also discuss how far all this can go, reminding us that there are not so many “Russian” names in our toponymy – start the process of “Russification” and we will not recognize our country.”
– Goodbye then Kurdyum, Karabulak, Akhmat, Ulesh, Shikhany, Uvek and others, – stated one of the subscribers. Another sarcastically suggested “going through the pastries and cakes”: “Down with the “unfriendly” Esterhazy, Napoleon, Prague, Kiev and the list goes on!”
At the same time, many ask a really interesting question: “We have nothing else to do?!”.
– Not so long ago there was a hysteria with the renaming of the “Turkish tandoor” to “Tandyr” after our downed plane in Syria. And what do we have now, 8 years later? Erdogan’s best friend and the friendly state of Turkey, another subscriber recalled.
Practice in Samara
Meanwhile, in March, a campaign to change signs unfolded in Samara. And not without the participation of the deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Alexander Khinshtein. So, he spoke about the complaints of the townspeople about the obscene sign of the Japanese restaurant “Jui”. And he contacted the head of the city, at the same time sending a request to the FAS, indicating that the legislation directly prohibits unethical and offensive advertising. The sign was taken down the same day.
The second example, as in Saratov, is connected with the NWO. Samarans told the deputy about a bar with the catchy name “Zombies”.
– All signs are made here in English (“Zombie”), and the letter “Z” is the brand name of the institution. A large “Z” is posted even on the front door, – the deputy said and noted. – Today, the letter “Z” has a completely unambiguous meaning in Russia: it is a symbol of the NWO. I agree with the residents: in today’s realities, such signs look, to put it mildly, strange. Even by itself, the analogy between zombies and CBO is offensive.
To be fair, Khinshtein clarified that the bar opened even before the start of the SVO, stating, however, that “for the entire past year, neither the founders nor the officials — the letter “Z” in the context of zombies did not cause any rejection.”
The next day, the owners of the establishment replaced the letter with the Russian “Z”, on this Khinshtein considered the incident settled. By the way, we must pay tribute to the deputy: he opposes the total replacement of foreign words, noting that “the Russian language consists of a large number of borrowings.” According to various estimates, this is from 20% to 40%. The parliamentarian is sure that this is the uniqueness of the language, it is “not a mossy fossil, but living matter.”
“To remove all “non-Russian” words from it is simply physically impossible,” Khinshtein concludes.
Restaurant “Cambridge”
How the story with the Saratov “Cambridge” will end is not yet clear. The owners of the restaurant do not comment on it in any way.
Recall that it was opened in the village of Dolgiy Buerak back in 2017 under the franchise of the Samara restaurant holding Millimon Family. The legal entity of this brand was liquidated last year, but under the wing of its founder, restaurateur Yevgeny Reimer, there are several chains of other catering establishments, including the Cambridge cafe.
The restaurant is located on the territory of an elite cottage village with the Hermes Estate equestrian club. All this belongs to the family of the deputy head of DOM.RF Denis Filippov.
Not so long ago, he tried to sell part of the plots adjacent to the village. According to BV, a capital businessman with Saratov roots showed interest. However, later in the announcement of the sale it was stated that the auction did not take place. In legal entities, the founders and leaders remained the same.
The “Cambridge” restaurant positions itself as a complex with an authentic English atmosphere – furniture, chandeliers, textiles and numerous accessories for the halls were created by special order.
The menu is represented by dishes according to the recipes of Gordon Ramsay and James Oliver. The concept of the kitchen is “bistronomy”, which means gastronomic delights at affordable prices.
The restaurant includes a large banquet hall (700 sq. m.) for 230 people, a chamber banquet hall, a VIP box with a view of the show jumping field and the stage, which also make up the largest concert venue in the region for 1 thousand people. On the second floor there is an aperitif area.
