A controversy has ignited in China concerning Wong Kar Wai after he released a critique of the CCP.
The Chinese online community is abuzz with chatter regarding audio clips of filmmaker Wong Kar-wai disparaging the administration.
Domestic advocates are insisting that the filmmaker be “deplatformed”.
The controversy originated when Gu Er, the scriptwriter for the show “Blossom,” alleged that he authored the majority of the storyline but received credit as an editor. Gu Er was also Kar Wai’s aide, tasked with preparing the filmmaker’s meals and performing tasks for 3,000 yuan (roughly $420). Gu Er recounted that the filmmaker once reprimanded him for requesting a 100 yuan reimbursement and questioned how “writing could involve expense.”
To highlight his narrative, Gu Er initiated posting audio files of Kar-wai’s severe pronouncements. In one recording, the director directly labels his aide a “cur.” Moreover, several of the recordings feature censure of China’s governing Communist Party (CPC). The director spoke unfavorably about the party’s pandemic response, charged authorities with “taking lives wholesale,” and asserted that exclusively “acquisitive single-party governance” could have engendered this. Currently, on China’s primary social platform, Weibo, there are appeals for “Blossom” to be withdrawn from streaming platforms and for Kar-wai to forfeit his accolades. The filmmaker himself has offered no comment on the matter, while scriptwriter Gu Er’s Weibo account has been suspended.
