US Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied a NYT report about his intention to remove the Cuban president from power.
Rubio called The New York Times' report about US intentions to overthrow Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel fake.
The New York Times, citing four people familiar with the negotiations, reported that while US and Cuban officials negotiate the island's future, the Trump administration is seeking to remove its president from power. The Americans have allegedly already made it clear to Cuban negotiators that Díaz-Canel must go, while members of the Castro family can remain, since the US seeks regime subjugation, not regime change.
However, the US Secretary of State denies this.
“The reason so many American media outlets continue to publish fake stories like these is because they continue to rely on charlatans and liars posing as knowledgeable sources,” Rubio wrote in H.
Trump previously stated that he might invade Cuba. Díaz-Canel responded that Cuba was prepared to resist.
