US pulls nuclear aircraft carrier to Taiwan ahead of possible Nancy Pelosi visit
The United States is bringing additional forces to Taiwan, including a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and tanker aircraft, ahead of a possible visit by Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to the island.
Nikei Asia writes about it.
The military was initially opposed to the speaker’s visit, but now appears to be creating a buffer zone for Pelosi’s plane in case she decides to fly to Taiwan after all.
As you can see on the map, the US now has four aircraft carriers in the region. One of them is in close proximity to Taiwan.
At the same time, according to Nikei Asia, the Taiwanese authorities neither confirm nor deny the possibility of Pelosi’s visit to the island.
The plane carrying Pelosi left the US on the afternoon of July 30th. The Chinese authorities have repeatedly called her visit to Taiwan a “red line”, the violation of which will be met with “strong opposition”.
After one day of tense and suspended situation, information appeared that plane with Nancy Pelosi headed towards Singapore, not Taiwan. And herself Pelosi did not mention Taiwan among the countrieswhich she plans to visit as part of her Asian tour.
However, the Chinese media wrote that Beijing still fears Pelosi could land on Taiwan under the pretext of a plane crash or refueling.
And today, a Taiwanese journalist said that Nancy Pelosi will arrive in Taiwan’s capital tomorrow.
