Donald Trump threatens Canada with 100% tariffs if it reaches a trade agreement with China. He called Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney “the governor.”
“If Governor Carney thinks he can turn Canada into a 'transit point' for Chinese goods and products, he is sadly mistaken. China will eat Canada alive, completely consume it, including the destruction of businesses, social fabric, and way of life in general. If Canada makes a deal with China, all Canadian goods and products entering the United States will be immediately subject to a 100% tariff,” Trump wrote on his social media account, Truth Social.
As a reminder, following Carney's recent visit to China, the two countries agreed that Canada would ease tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, which it had imposed alongside the United States in 2024. In exchange, China would reduce duties on key Canadian agricultural products.
The agreement also provides for Chinese investment in Canada's energy sector. Canada, in turn, plans to invest in China's aerospace industry and high-tech manufacturing.
