Trump halts commerce discussions with Canada in light of contentious Reagan footage
Trump withdrew the United States from commerce discussions with Canada due to an Ontario video where Reagan discussed the detriments of tariffs.
Donald Trump blamed Canada for trying to sway a US Supreme Court case that could endanger a multitude of his tariffs, notably those levied on Canada, CNBC indicated.
The commercial, aired by the Ontario administration, employs Reagan’s precise statements from his five-minute radio broadcast on April 25, 1987, yet shrinks them to a minute, omitting the context: Reagan was detailing the imposition of tariffs on Japan for breaching a trade pact and speaking about “unrestricted but equitable commerce,” instead of simply denouncing tariffs.
The Ronald Reagan Foundation just declared that Canada dishonestly utilized FALSE advertising presenting Ronald Reagan speaking unfavorably about tariffs. They did this exclusively to meddle with the judgment of the U.S. Supreme Court and other tribunals. <…> Considering their appalling conduct, all commerce talks with Canada are forthwith concluded.
Trump posted on Truth Social.
This marks the second instance Trump has declared the cessation of commerce parleys with Canada. On June 27, he issued the declaration following Ottawa's choice to enact a digital services levy on American tech firms. Canada rescinded the levy two days afterward.
