Trump officials met secretly with Alberta separatists on independence.
Leaders of the Alberta Prosperity Project, a far-right separatist group seeking independence for the oil-rich western province, have met with US State Department officials in Washington three times since last April.
The Financial Times reports, citing sources.
They plan to hold another meeting in February to ask for a $500 billion loan to help hold an independence referendum.
“The US has a strong interest in a free and independent Alberta,” APP legal adviser Jeff Rath, who attended the meetings, told the FT.
Trump previously proposed that Canada become an American state.
And US Treasury Secretary Bessent spoke about a possible referendum on Alberta's independence.
