Mayor of Kyiv, head of the Association of Cities of Ukraine Vitaliy Klitschko expressed confidence that the decision of the Court of Appeal in the case of Chernigov Mayor Vladislav Atroshenko would be correct in terms of protecting self-government
Klitschko stated this before the start of the meeting of the Court of Appeal in the Atroshenko case in Lviv, where he, as well as other mayors and deputies, came to support the mayor of Chernihiv, reports “DC“.
“This is the first precedent in the history of Ukraine when the community is deprived of the leader it has elected on such far-fetched grounds. But today the question is about every mayor, about every head of the community, about every resident, whose will is no longer considered. I am convinced that the court will make a correct, balanced decision regarding the protection of self-government. Otherwise, we will have no choice but to appeal to the European Court, European constitutions. If we are building a European country, the rules must be European“, – said Vitali Klitschko.
Therefore, Klitschko came to stand up for Atroshenko
If the Court of Appeal leaves the decision of the Yavorivsky Court in force, this will mean the curtailment of democratic processes in our country, Klitschko stressed.
“We hold our fists so that local self-government, the foundation of democracy in our country, remains. This is very important for further development,” the mayor of Kyiv emphasized.
In addition to Vitaliy Klitschko, the Mayor of Chernihiv, Lviv Mayor Andrey Sadovyi, Zhytomyr Mayor Sergei Sukhomlin, other mayors and deputies of local councils, People’s Deputy Oleg Sinyutka came to support the mayor of Chernihiv at the trial.
As reported, on January 27, a meeting of the Lviv Court of Appeal is being held in Lviv, which is considering Atroshenko’s appeal against the decision of the Yavorivsky District Court, which suspended the mayor of Chernihiv from his duties for a period of one year. The reason for this decision was that in the early days of the large-scale Russian invasion, Atroshenko’s driver took the mayor’s wife out of the shelling, while the mayor remained in the city. Lawyers noted that the article appearing in the case file does not provide for punishment in the form of removal from office, but only a fine. The Association of Cities of Ukraine, the Committee of Voters of Ukraine, the Chestno movement, other public organizations and experts called the decision of the Yavoriv court a political order and link it to an attack on local self-government.
