The wife of one of Belarus's leading prison guards has been sentenced to prison for participating in protests.
Sergei Sandalyuk is the former deputy head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs' Department of Corrections. He held this position from 2013 to 2018. This department oversees all Belarusian pretrial detention centers, penal colonies, and prisons.
He and his wife, Angela, were tried in August 2024 under the “people's” Article 342 (Part 1) of the Criminal Code—usually used for prosecution for participating in protests.
In November 2024, they were tried again. It is unclear whether this was for a different march, or whether the previous case was sent back for retrial after an appeal.
The sentence handed down for Angela Sandaluk in November 2024 has been announced. According to Dissidentby, she was given a two-year prison sentence. It's possible she has already served her entire sentence and been released (the length of time she spent in pretrial detention is unknown).
