The United States evacuated 1,500 sailors, their families, and several hundred pets from the base in Bahrain, where the Fifth Fleet is stationed, after a series of retaliatory strikes from Iran.
NPR reported this, citing an unnamed US Navy official.
“They were literally told, 'Only take what you can carry in your backpack. You have to leave,'” Keith Shainsey, deputy commander of one of the American Legion veterans' associations, told NPR.
According to the radio station, approximately 8,000 people were stationed at the US Naval Support Facility in Bahrain before the conflict began. NPR also reports that evacuations have also taken place from other US bases in the Middle East, although details are not yet available.
