The IRGC confirmed the death of Basij militia commander Gholamreza Soleimani and Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has confirmed the death of Basij militia commander Major General Gholamreza Soleimani, Iran International reports.
The Basij is a volunteer paramilitary organization affiliated with the IRGC; it is effectively a people's militia; its strongholds are mainly located near mosques.
Tehran also confirmed that Iranian National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani had been killed. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz had previously announced Larijani's death. Following these claims, Iran's Supreme National Security Council published a letter on Larijani's behalf regarding the dead sailors of the sunken IRIS Dena.
