Former top managers of the bankrupt Taurus Bank and its beneficiary Valery Tolkachev were placed in a pre-trial detention center, and the latter’s wife, Irina Tolkacheva, was placed under house arrest. The defendants are accused of withdrawing about 723 million rubles and 2.3 million dollars from a financial organization, as stated in the criminal case materials.

“Two former top managers of the bankrupt Taurus bank and its ultimate beneficiary Valery Tolkachev were immediately sent to pre-trial detention. They are accused of issuing obviously bad loans from October 2013 to March 2015. During this time, 19 front companies controlled by members of the criminal group received approximately 30 loans worth 722.7 million rubles and 2.3 million dollars. Investigators believe that Tolkachev was in charge of the scheme,” Kommersant reports with reference to the paperwork.

“Kommersant”, 09/23/2023, “Theft at Taurus was promoted to management”: In addition to them, the ex-heads of the St. Petersburg and capital branches Dmitry Petrovsky and Dmitry Korolenko, as well as the former chairman of the board, were brought to the investigator for questioning Andrey Podgornov. Moreover, the latter, according to Kommersant, only this year was released on parole from a colony, where he was serving a seven-year sentence for issuing fictitious loans for more than 1.13 billion rubles. from the same Taurus. These funds, as the investigation and the court established, “were misappropriated by accomplices in the crime through a chain of consecutive banking transactions.” Let us note that, also thanks to the testimony of convicted accomplices of Podgorny’s former chairman, the investigation now has grounds to bring the ultimate beneficiary of Taurus, Valery Tolkachev, to criminal liability. According to some reports, during the searches, documents were found on the issuance of such loans, endorsed by himself, Irina Tolkacheva, Dmitry Petrovsky, Dmitry Korolenko and Andrei Podgornov. It is interesting that when considering the appeal against the latter’s verdict, which took place in July 2020, the banker’s lawyer argued that Mr. Podgornov was essentially a nominal leader at Taurus. — Insert K.ru

The Central Bank deprived Taurus of its license in April 2015. The main case of large-scale theft was opened a year later. The company owes investors about 4.6 billion rubles.
