Moldova declares a state of emergency due to the threat of cutting off gas supplies through Ukraine

The Moldovan authorities have declared a state of emergency since December 16 due to the threat of stopping Russian gas supplies through the territory of Ukraine.

At the moment, Transnistria risks being without Russian gas supplies, and on the right bank of the Dniester the power supply may be disrupted. Chisinau purchases gas on the European market through a gas pipeline from Romania.

We recall that the agreement concluded in 2019 on the transit of Russian gas to Europe through Ukraine expires at the end of December. Kyiv does not plan to extend it.

Deputies gathered at night for an emergency meeting, at which the opposition also tried to discuss a vote of no confidence in the government of Prime Minister Dorin Recean due to the upcoming energy crisis. But the opposition did not have enough votes for the resignation to take place.

«Gazprom» and the Moldovan authorities held negotiations at which other options were considered, for example, supplies bypassing Ukraine through Turkey or transit along the previous route through Ukrainian territory, but with the delivery of Russian gas at the border, after which the buyer would pay for the transit independently.

The Moldovan authorities plan to solve the energy crisis within 60 days.
