Striker of the Moscow “Spartak” Dutchman Quincy Promes received 1.5 years in prison. This decision was made by the Amsterdam court in the case of Promes’ attack on his cousin, Dutch media reported. The football player will appeal the verdict, his lawyer Robert Malevich said.
The prosecutor’s office demanded two years in prison for the football player. At the time of the release of the material, Promes was in Russia, he was not present at any court hearing. The crime happened in July 2020. According to investigators, Promes attacked his cousin with a knife and inflicted several wounds on him. Initially, the Spartak football player was tried to be prosecuted for attempted murder, but later the charge was reclassified to aggravated assault. What is the probability that a football player will be extradited to his homeland, Mikhail Tyapkov, deputy editor-in-chief of the Sport24 portal, argues:
“He received, probably, the minimum term that could be expected under such circumstances. Another thing is that 1.5 years in prison is still 1.5 years in prison. If Promes had not left for Russia by that time and was present at the trial, perhaps the term would have been conditional, but hypothetically. How this will affect his stay in Russia, in Spartak is a difficult question. Given our tense relations with European countries, including the Netherlands, we can assume that Russia is a good opportunity for Promes to sit out. But practice shows that, despite political problems, interaction in the criminal sphere continues. Therefore, it cannot be 100% certain that there will be no consequences for Promes from this court decision and that he will definitely not be extradited from Russia. Stabbing a brother is not the same as being Edward Snowden or Julian Assange, is it? Therefore, everything is complicated here, but Promes planned to get a Russian passport. If he changes citizenship, renounces Dutch, as far as I understand, this will not annul the verdict of the court, but he will no longer be prosecuted as a citizen of the Netherlands. If we assume that Russia will return to the Eurocups, Promes will be banned from leaving the country. Because if by that time the Russian side does not extradite him to the Netherlands, he will not travel to Europe, where a Dutch court can get him.”
At the end of the last season, Quincy Promes was recognized by the fans as the best player of Spartak. He played 37 matches, scoring 25 goals and making ten assists.
