The current mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, will put forward his candidacy for participation in the election of the head of the city, which will be held on September 10, from United Russia, and not as an independent candidate. This was reported to the Daily Storm by sources. Information about Sobyanin’s plans was confirmed to Kommersant by State Duma Deputy Chairman Pyotr Tolstoy. He told the publication that Sobyanin’s decision was due to his close connection with United Russia and the consolidation of society around the president’s party.
The press service of the Moscow branch of United Russia recalled that Sobyanin is a member of the bureau of the Supreme Council of the party. It is noted that in 2021 the mayor headed the United Russia party list in the State Duma elections and did a lot for the development of the capital, for the implementation of the United Russia People’s Program.
“The nomination will take place at a party conference, the date of which will be determined after the publication of the decision to call the elections,” the press service explained.
The leader of the Moscow United Russia Party, State Duma Vice Speaker Pyotr Tolstoy stressed that Sobyanin, during his time as mayor, managed to implement a huge number of projects that qualitatively changed the lives of not only Muscovites. “The capital’s approaches, tested in Moscow, actually changed life in the country. Therefore, he is the person whose candidacy is easy to defend precisely because of real achievements,” Tolstoy is convinced.
Sergei Sobyanin first became the mayor of Moscow in October 2010, after Yuri Luzhkov was dismissed ahead of schedule due to “loss of the president’s confidence.” In June 2013, Sobyanin resigned early in order to take part in direct elections, and in September he won them.
