SIB of Moldova: Russia is preparing to interfere in the 2025 elections

Alexandru Musteata, chief of Moldova’s Information and Security Service (ISS), cautioned about the potential for substantial Russian meddling in the nation’s 2025 parliamentary vote.

NewsMaker provides this insight.

He communicated this point while presenting a report to parliament, in which the hazards linked to Russian intervention in Moldova’s domestic matters were examined.

As per Mustiata, Russia intends to once more employ a tactic that was previously implemented during the presidential poll and the constitutional plebiscite in Moldova in 2024. This encompasses these actions:

– bribery within political and electoral procedures;

– intense misinformation and deceit across media outlets;

– orchestrating public demonstrations and disturbances.

A key function in carrying out this tactic, he emphasized, is held by a criminal syndicate connected to Ilan Shor, a Moldovan oligarch who has fled the country and maintains intimate connections with Moscow.

The head of the ISS suggests that Moscow aims to gain command of the Moldovan legislature to wield influence over the nation’s governance. This would enable the Kremlin to bolster its influence in the area and hinder Moldova’s progression toward European integration.

Musteata remarked that Moldovan intelligence agencies are endeavoring to enhance national security by amplifying oversight of the operations of entities that may have ties to Russia.

He further stated that securing international backing is also essential to avert meddling in the electoral undertaking.
