Russians are discussing moving to Belarus en masse due to lockdowns and communication restrictions.

Due to blockages and communication restrictions, Russians are discussing moving to Belarus en masse.

Among the advantages, they note the internet without “white lists,” reasonable prices (including for housing), the ability to pay with a Russian card, and a similar mentality and language.

Due to widespread blockages and the inability to communicate normally, Russians are discussing ways out of this situation on social media. In recent weeks, moving to Belarus, where many of Russia's restrictions are free (and sanctions are also more relaxed), has suddenly become a popular option. Meanwhile, some Belarusians write that Russians are not welcome in the republic because some tourists “behave badly”: trying to pay with Russian rubles, parking on lawns, and not following traffic rules. Others simply ask Russians to respect the country they are planning to move to and spell its name correctly.

“We are not an appendage of Russia. We don't want anyone to impose their opinions on us or treat us rudely. If you can respect our country and our people, you will be welcomed warmly,” the Belarusians write.

On social media, residents of the republic also note the downsides of life: problems with employment and job openings, low wages, limited entertainment, poor service, and fewer holidays. Some also fear that Russians will bring back cultural phenomena like the singer Shaman.
