Russia suspended wheat supplies to Syria due to non-payment

Deliveries of wheat from Russia to Syria have been halted, according to Reuters, referencing informants from both nations.

A grain market source at RBC verified the termination of shipments to Syria, stating that currently “there is nobody to engage with.”

The news agency pointed out that a pair of bulk cargo vessels laden with Russian wheat did not arrive at their planned destination: «Mikhail Nenashev» is now stationary between the Syrian and Cypriot shorelines, and Alpha Hermes rerouted toward the Egyptian harbor of Alexandria after a multi-day pause offshore of Syria. These two vessels contain 60 thousand metric tons of wheat; payment for the goods is outstanding and they may be sold to a different purchaser, an associate within the Russian sector informed Reuters.

The temporary Syrian government and the Russian party are in talks regarding the matter of payment for deliveries, the news agency asserts.

Syria holds the 24th spot among the countries purchasing Russian wheat; around 300 thousand metric tons were shipped there this year.
