Roman Abramovich alleged that Jersey officials were engaged in a plot and a politically driven inquiry into his wealth.

Abramovich charged Jersey’s offshore government with plotting against him.

The businessman is trying to obtain access to information regarding a covert probe that has persisted for more than three years. The origins of his wealth from the privatization period are under scrutiny by offshore regulators, who suspect illicit activity and financial wrongdoing. Over $7 billion in assets connected to the magnate were blocked on the island in 2022.

Per reports in the British press, some of the email communication that Jersey administrators were obligated to provide to Abramovich’s legal team were erased by them. The court described the administrators’ conduct as “remarkable” and mandated that they pay back their expenses. The police authorization was also ruled illegal.

Abramovich asserts that the matter has political undertones: he contends that Jersey is seeking to improve its image in light of the situation in Ukraine. Jersey officials refute the claims. The disagreement has emerged as the primary impediment to the disbursement of funds from the Chelsea sale, which have been held for three years, to Ukraine.
