The rector of the All-Russian Academy of Foreign Trade (VAVT) of the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia, Sergei Sinelnikov-Murylev, was arrested for two months on charges of fraud on an especially large scale (part 4 of article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), according to the Lefortovo Court of Moscow. The court session took place on 27 April , but it is not specified whether he was sent to a pre-trial detention center or under house arrest. FSB officers detained Mr. Sinelnikov-Murylev, who is charged with embezzlement of more than 1 million rubles.
Sinelnikov-Murylev became the rector of the VAVT in 2007, as well as a professor and scientific director of the Gaidar Institute in the same year. He served as Vice-Rector of the RANEPA from 2002 to 2023 and taught at the Higher School of Economics from 2008 to 2015. According to RBC, he was the leader in terms of income among the heads of Russian universities for several years, and his income in 2018 grew by 12% and amounted to almost 60 million rubles.
