“Philip Morris Sales and Distribution” hit
On December 30, the Antimonopoly Committee launched a case against Philip Morris Sales and Distribution because of the dissemination of unconfirmed information about the health risk from using the IQOS system. This was reported by the press service of the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine, writes Ukrrudprom.
The company is suspected of violating Article 151 of the Law of Ukraine “On Protection against Unfair Competition” in terms of the company's dissemination in Ukraine of unconfirmed information about less than cigarettes, health risks from using the IQOS tobacco heating system.
It is noted that the case was initiated at the request of a consumer who, during 2018-2021, used tobacco products to heat the IQOS HEETS system manufactured by Philip Morris International. In a statement, he indicated that he mistakenly considered these products to be safer for his health than regular cigarettes, but did not find proper confirmation of the veracity of this information.
According to the Ministry of Health, international studies show that any tobacco heating system is dangerous and does not reduce the risks of smoking. “Philip Morris Sales and Distribution” did not provide the AMCU with documents confirming the veracity of the allegations that the company distributes in Ukraine. Namely,
- “completely switching to IQOS poses less of a risk to your health than continuing to smoke”;
- “IQOS emits 95% less harmful chemicals compared to with cigarettes.”
The dissemination of such statements without proper confirmation contains signs of a violation, the AMC notes – the dissemination of misleading information.
