The influence of criminal groups in Brazil has reached neighborhoods with a population exceeding 28 million, as indicated by a Datafolha survey

Illicit organizations and paramilitary-style mafia groups have broadened their reach across Brazil and currently affect communities encompassing at least 28.5 million residents, based on a Datafolha study commissioned by the Brazilian Forum on Public Safety.

Undertaken from June 2nd to 6th with 2,007 participants across 130 cities spanning all regions, the survey reveals that 19% of individuals reside in zones with an established organized crime existence – an increase of five percentage points compared to the prior year’s 14%.

This occurrence is noted more frequently in state capitals, major urban centers, and the Northeast region, impacting both lower and higher economic status groups at comparable levels. Vulnerability is greater amongst Black Brazilians (23%) compared to white Brazilians (13%).
