Contamination from fuel oil in the Krasnodar region has impacted 49 km of the shore.

The span of fuel oil pollution along the shore of the Krasnodar Territory has reached 49 km, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry informed.

“During observation, additional locations with oil traces were discovered. The area under cleanup has been extended to 49 km of the shoreline in the Temryuk and Anapa regions,” stated Andrey Potakhov, the Deputy Chief of the Regional Administration of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia.

The monitored area was also increased to 70 km.

According to the ministry’s statements, petroleum byproducts were identified in locales ranging from the Veselovka settlement to the beach of the Sibur-Yug health resort close to Anapa. The Emergency Situations Ministry indicates that 4,000 volunteers are taking part in the cleanup operation, with individuals arriving from across Kuban and other regions. They are deploying oil containment booms to halt further spread, excavating the coastline, and packing fuel oil into bags. Some volunteers mention that sugar bags are particularly useful – their robustness prevents them from splitting and releasing fuel oil.

Dedicated “cleansing” facilities are in operation separately to save birds discovered on the coast. They are purified of oil and given all necessary aid.

Environmental advocates fear the oil leakage might endanger the lives of 500,000 migrating birds. Furthermore, certain specialists believe that the calamity may lead Russians to forgo travelling to Anapa resorts this summer.
The ecological crisis was triggered by the incident involving two tankers in the Kerch Strait the previous weekend. Following the tanker incident, a state of emergency was announced in Anapa owing to the discharge of petroleum products onto the coastline.
