Roskomnadzor's attempts to restrict VPNs in Russia could disrupt the entire internet, said Natalya Kaspersky, president of the InfoWatch group of companies and co-founder of Kaspersky Lab.
According to her, VPNs have been around for over 30 years, permeate the entire internet, and use protocols that often intersect with critical infrastructure. Attempts to block them risk paralyzing everything else on the network.
“There's no technical way to block a VPN without disrupting the entire internet. And—importantly!—the more effort and resources invested in a DPI blocker, the worse it will work,” Kaspersky noted.
