The Italian Ministry of Justice will check the Milanese judges, who replaced the decision to place the son of the Krasnoyarsk governor Artem Uss on detention under house arrest, he escaped at the end of March and returned to Russia. This order was given by Minister Carlo Nordio, write Corriere della Sera, La Repubblica and Today.
The minister ordered a “verification investigation,” the latest newspaper clarifies.
Corriere della Sera notes that the review is a sign of a clash between the government and the judiciary, in particular the Milan Court of Appeal. The judges allowed the extradition of Artem Uss to the United States, but at the same time eased the restrictions on him.
“This is not the fault of the government, but of another state body,” Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni said at a two-hour meeting of the Committee for Parliamentary Control of the Country’s Security (COPASIR).
Uss was detained in Milan last fall at the request of the United States. According to the US Department of Justice, the son of the Krasnoyarsk governor and several other Russians were involved in schemes to sell oil from Venezuela using shell companies and cryptocurrencies. They are also suspected of violating sanctions due to the purchase in the West of sub-sanctioned dual-use electronics and military technologies.
In November, after an Italian court approved the extradition of Uss Jr. to the United States, he was placed under house arrest in Milan. Corriere della Sera wrote that the US Department of Justice warned Rome about the high risk of the entrepreneur’s escape, but the house arrest decision was upheld.
Italian investigators believed that six or seven accomplices helped Uss escape. In addition, they considered the version that they used a frequency suppressor in case of damage to the electronic bracelet that the entrepreneur was wearing. On the eve of La Repubblica reported that the identity of some alleged accomplices established. They helped Uss get from Milan to Trieste, cross the border with Slovenia, get to Serbia and from there fly to Russia.
On April 4, Uss confirmed that he was in Russia and thanked “strong and reliable people” for their help. In the country, a businessman has also been charged with money laundering. In the fall, when Uss was detained in Italy, the Ministry of Internal Affairs put him on the wanted list, and the Meshchansky Court arrested him in absentia. After returning to Russia, his preventive measure was changed to a written undertaking not to leave the country. His father, the governor of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, Alexander Uss, thanked everyone who supported him and was ready to turn a shoulder at “difficult moments” because of his son’s arrest in Italy, expressing special gratitude to President Vladimir Putin.
