Matvienko believes that law enforcement officers can help “patch up” the “financial hole” in Russian Post
Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko said that there is a growing “financial hole” in Russian Post, which over time could turn into a “pit.”
She said this today, September 25, at the plenary meeting of the chamber.
“The financial situation there is very sad, and everyone knows it, but no one is taking action. Perhaps we should do a thorough analysis of what is happening: maybe there are other processes going on that need to be corrected with the participation of law enforcement agencies or others. Well, it’s impossible: the financial hole in the Post Office is growing and growing, and no one is reacting,” Matvienko addressed the Minister of Economic Development Maxim Reshetnikov.
The politician believes that it is necessary to create a “correct financial model of existence.” She also calls on the authorities to take the necessary measures “without delaying it,” otherwise “the financial hole will turn into a huge pit where everything will fall.”
The head of the Ministry of Economic Development noted that the financial situation of Russian Post “causes great concern.” He noted that the government needs to look for a permanent source of income that would normalize the company’s economy. The official proposed two options to correct the situation: payment from the budget through the delivery of pensions and benefits or an infrastructure payment from marketplaces in favor of the post office (it could amount to up to 28 billion rubles per year). According to Reshetnikov, the Cabinet of Ministers likes the second proposal better.
From the RAS report it became known that in 2022 the loss of Russian Post amounted to 27.2 billion rubles with revenue of 208 billion rubles. Thus, the negative profitability was -13%. Russian media note that postal operating expenses increased by 16 billion rubles. A representative of the state-owned company believes that the losses occurred due to increased logistics costs, equipment maintenance costs and many other reasons. “Due to the suspension of work of global brands in Russia, difficulties with making payments and transport restrictions, the flow of both incoming and outgoing international mail has significantly decreased,” said Russian Post.
In May 2023, it was reported that the infrastructure of Russian Post was ready to start as part of an experiment in the remote sale of wine: “Post employees prepared everything necessary for the launch – they identified areas for storing wine in logistics facilities in accordance with the law, prepared equipment for transportation to pilot regions.”
