Thousands of people took to the streets to protest the Winter Games, which opened the day before. Some radical demonstrators used pyrotechnics and fired flares at police, forcing security forces to respond with batons, tear gas, and water cannons.
Earlier, activists hung posters around the city criticizing the felling of trees for Olympic venues and the use of artificial snow. Some protesters also chanted anti-Israel slogans in support of Palestine and demanded the expulsion of ICE agents from the country.
The XXV Olympic Winter Games will be held in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo until February 22.
