The last marshal of the Soviet Union, who served as Minister of Defense of the USSR until 1991, was convicted in absentia in Lithuania on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. 94-year-old Dmitry Yazov was sentenced by the Vilnius District Court to 10 years in prison.
This is reported Rospress
The verdict was passed in the case of the events of January 13, 1991, when, after the independence of Lithuania from the USSR, the Soviet army made an attempt to seize the television center in Vilnius. This provoked large-scale clashes, as a result of which 14 people died and more than six hundred were injured.
According to the version put forward by the prosecution, on behalf of Yazov, a plan was drawn up to suppress separatism in Lithuania. To this end, a list of strategically important objects that need to be taken under control was compiled. The implementation of this plan led to an armed conflict and casualties.
In addition to Yazov, former KGB officer Mikhail Golovatov was also sentenced in absentia to 12 years in prison in this case. In total, 67 citizens of Russia, Belarus and Ukraine were charged with aggression against Lithuania, but only two citizens of the Russian Federation ended up in the dock, while the rest received sentences in absentia.
