The newly appointed Prime Minister of Ukraine, Yulia Svyrydenko, indicated her intention to request further financial aid from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as she intends to bolster state finances amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Bloomberg is reporting on this.

Yulia Svyrydenko, who just last week became the second female leader of Ukraine’s government, explicitly pointed out the nation’s economic challenges. As per her statement, international benefactors have so far only supplied half of the approximate $75 billion that Ukraine will require over the upcoming couple of years to finance its defense spending.

Of particular importance is the fact that the existing IMF arrangement, totaling approximately $16 billion, concludes in 2027. Given the ambiguity surrounding the war’s duration, deliberations concerning a new program are anticipated to commence as soon as the subsequent program evaluation in August, Sviridenko highlighted.

“Should the preliminary scenario project that the war endures into the following year, a fresh IMF initiative is highly probable,” she stated in an interview with Bloomberg News. During the August visit, economic and military outlooks will undergo scrutiny “to ascertain whether a new initiative is justifiable and its prospective parameters.”

The shift in Ukraine’s leadership formed part of a plan to install individuals loyal to the president, capable of establishing rapport with Trump, into crucial posts. Svyrydenko assumed her role 11 weeks after her team at the Ministry of Economy finalized an agreement with the US concerning access to Ukrainian natural resources.

The recently appointed prime minister also intends to conduct a virtual discussion with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in the near future; they have already collaborated intently during mineral resource negotiations. Furthermore, the new administration seeks to enhance cooperation with the US regarding arms procurement—notably, Patriot missile defense systems—and the collaborative manufacture of drones.

According to Sviridenko, this might even encompass the construction of factories in the United States for drone production.

“Our vision is that we stand as a genuinely resilient nation. I regard Ukraine as a premier global example of a cohesive battlefield for evaluating cutting-edge technologies,” she asserted.
