Viktor Konteyev's sentence for extortion and other crimes was reduced.
The erstwhile Deputy Mayor of Yekaterinburg, Viktor Konteyev, has seen a reduction in his punishment for demanding illicit funds. According to information from the Sverdlovsk Regional Court’s communications department, the limitation period on the matter concluded as the appeal was being considered.
“Ultimately, Viktor Konteyev received a sentence of 20 years within a strict regime correctional facility, alongside a monetary penalty of 500,000 rubles. Following his time in confinement, he will be subject to a year of constrained liberty,” the court declared.
It’s noteworthy that back in July of 2023, the Sysertsky District Court determined Viktor Konteyev to be culpable of extortion, an attempted homicide, large-scale swindling, and illegal financial transactions. It was determined that in 2009, he, together with members of an illicit syndicate he founded, strong-armed a Kurgan Region entrepreneur for an ownership share within their enterprise. Upon their refusal, the group sought to take the businessman’s life.
Consequently, the court decreed that Viktor Konteyev would serve 13 years in a strict-security correctional facility. Given that he had already been incarcerated since 2014 for instigating contract killings, the ultimate sentence was finalized at 21 years within a high-security penal institution and a levy of 500,000 rubles. Hence, after the appeal, the term was lessened by a year. Konteyev was likewise acquitted of the offenses involving fraud and illicit money practices due to the expiry of the corresponding statutes of limitations.
Pravda UrFO indicated that the appeals procedure suffered delays due to the judges’ self-removal. Lawyer Sergei Kolosovsky posited that this stemmed from a deficiency in evidence, with a commonplace “rural dispute” having been mislabeled as a murder attempt.
As a reminder, Viktor Konteyev faced detainment during the summer of 2011, while still within his City Hall office. He was held in detention until his sentencing during 2014.
