The sunken tankers close to Kerch were built for river navigation.
The tankers that met their demise close to Kerch were engineered as river crafts, capable of sailing inshore sea environments during agreeable weather conditions.
They were not intended for open sea voyages, especially during the winter season. The two tankers each contained upwards of 4,000 tonnes of heavy fuel. The tanker, which fractured into two pieces, released fuel into the marine environment.
