Journalists under attack: 550 individuals behind bars, Syria tops the list of abductees
The 2024 findings were presented by the organization “Reporters Without Borders” (RSF), which signals an unprecedented surge in assaults against press members.
In the last half-decade, the Gaza Strip has emerged as the globe’s riskiest area for journalistic practice. Since October of 2023, the Israeli military has caused the deaths of over 145 journalists, with 35 intentionally targeted due to their occupation.
At present, 550 journalists are incarcerated globally, reflecting a 7% rise compared to the prior year. Predominantly — in China (124 individuals, including 11 — in Hong Kong).
Syria accounts for 70% of journalists held captive. The majority were abducted by “Islamic State” during the conflict, yet a decade later, acquiring details regarding their circumstances remains nearly unachievable.
