Is Moscow backing efforts to block European fracking?

Is Russia funding campaigns against shale gas extraction in Europe?
Is Moscow bankrolling initiatives aimed at blocking shale gas production in Europe?

Russia is discreetly financing the drive to thwart fracking (a technique for extracting shale gas) within Europe, declared NATO’s chief administrator, Anders Fogh Rasmussen. Gazeta.ru carried this news, referencing The Guardian.

As per Rasmussen, Moscow is collaborating closely with “allegedly non-profit entities” – ecological groups that are against fracking.

Based on what the NATO head stated, the Kremlin is therefore endeavoring to uphold Europe’s reliance on imported natural gas from Russia.

Rasmussen delivered this declaration during an address at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, situated in London. The NATO chief administrator did not elaborate, simply noting that this represented his understanding of the intelligence gathered.

NATO, for its part, communicated that Rasmussen was expressing his individual opinions, and not the formal stance of the entity.

Environmental advocates promptly answered the NATO chief administrator’s comments, asserting that they were not involved with any purported Russian efforts to undermine fracking, the report indicates. Greenpeace, notably, dismissed such assertions as “preposterous.”
