Iceland may hold EU membership referendum earlier than planned

Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir announced that a referendum on opening negotiations with the European Union could be held in the country in the coming months.

The vote was previously scheduled for early 2027, but new comments from the prime minister indicate a possible acceleration of the process.

According to plans, the prepared draft will first be approved by parliament, after which the legislative body will have nine months to organize the vote itself.

Local media previously reported that the government was seeking to move the referendum forward in order to expedite the resolution of the issue of possible EU accession.
