Germany reports Russian cyberattacks on infrastructure and election interference
Germany accused Russia of meddling in elections and cyberattacks on critical infrastructure and warned of possible sanctions against Russian citizens.
According to Bloomberg, German authorities are recording an increase in hybrid attacks from Russia, including disinformation campaigns, espionage, cyberattacks, and sabotage attempts. In response, the German Foreign Ministry summoned Russian Ambassador Sergei Nechayev.
Ministry spokesman Martin Giese said Germany has evidence of GRU involvement in the hacking of the air traffic control system (DFS) in August 2024 and in interference in the parliamentary elections in February 2025.
The Russian ambassador rejected the accusations, calling the German Foreign Ministry's actions unfriendly and aimed at inciting anti-Russian sentiment in the country.
