Chewing marmalade is especially loved and in demand among children. And so the question of the quality and safety of the dessert is extremely important. But, unfortunately, not all manufacturers are absolutely honest with buyers.
Why do they like chewing marmalade? For sweetness. For the fact that this is a peculiar taste of childhood. Bears, worms, berries, cars, fish of red, yellow, green and other bright colors always attract attention. And if at the beginning of the 2000s there were few chewing marmalade on the shelves in our country, now its abundance is really amazing. Moreover, according to statistics, the appetites of buyers for this product are constantly growing, increasing by about eight percent annually.
True, there is little benefit in chewing marmalade, because about 70% of it consists of sugar. Therefore, it is definitely not worth getting involved in them. Moreover, all sorts of tricks and violations on the part of manufacturers can make this sweetness even dangerous.
Reporters of the NashPotrebNadzor program on the NTV channel, together with employees of Roskachestvo, decided to find out how high-quality chewing marmalade is offered to Russians.
To conduct a check in ordinary supermarkets, chewing marmalade of seven well-known brands was purchased: Haribo, babyfox, “Frou Frou”, Bebeto, “Pull-Ka”, Mamba And fruit-tella.
Sugar dominates
There is no generally accepted recipe for making chewing marmalade. Manufacturers, as a rule, use their own proportions of the combination of ingredients – someone prefers to make a product that is sweeter, while others try to mix in less sugar. However, it is important that this information is available to the buyer and that the product packaging contains honest data. As it turned out during the audit, only two out of seven manufacturers reported the correct figures for the sugar content. And here a very reasonable question arises – why is this happening? Sugar sprinkled on the eye? Or is it a deliberate ploy to interest those who are a fan of more dietary formulations and monitor their own weight?
According to the results of the study, the least amount of sugar was found in chewing marmalade brands Mamba and Fruit-tella. But products from Frou-Frou and Bebeto turned out to be the sweetest of the seven samples. If we recalculate for a 100-gram pack, it becomes obvious that almost all the studied sweets contain more sugar than the established daily allowance. The only exception in this case was Fruit-tella marmalade. True, we are talking about symbolic figures here – sugar in it is only four tenths of a percent less than the daily limit suggests.
As the expert of Roskachestvo explained Natalia Zavyalova, this is equivalent to 10-14 teaspoons of pure sugar per hundred grams. According to her, in addition to this, one should take into account the fact that during the day a person receives sugar from other products. For this reason, there is only one conclusion – you definitely shouldn’t get carried away with chewing marmalade.
Vitamins are not always available
Manufacturers are trying to compensate for the obvious harm from sugar by including various vitamins in the product. Most often, vitamins C, PP, B5, B6 are added to chewing marmalade. However, as the results of the study show, promising is not always doing. In particular, in packs with Babyfox and Mamba marmalade, declared useful additives at all missing.
Assessing the absence of the promised vitamins in the product, Natalya Zavyalova stated that, in fact, there is a fraud in the labeling.
cheating with weight
However, labeling problems were also found in Bebeto marmalade. For some reason, the manufacturer did not indicate the weight of the product on the packaging. And they quickly took advantage of this – one of the sellers of sweets on the marketplace decided to “add on”, indicating the weight more than the actual one. The excess amounted to 13%.
Summing up the results of the study, the reporters of the NashPotrebNadzor program stated that they could only recommend chewing marmalade from the Fruit-tella brand. However, sweets of other brands can also be bought, they do not carry any danger. But only their manufacturers should rule out obvious fraud.
