Poland's former justice minister is accused of misusing public funds to purchase spyware.

Poland's previous minister of justice faces accusations of inappropriately using government money to acquire surveillance software.

Polish legal authorities plan to indict ex-Justice Minister Zbigniew Zibro for the improper allocation of state resources and acquiring the Israeli Pegasus spyware, supposedly for observing rival political figures.

As per details from the Attorney General’s Office, the chief prosecutor submitted a request to revoke Zibro’s parliamentary protection, paving the way for his detention and prosecution on 26 charges, encompassing formation and command of an organized crime syndicate, misappropriation, and exceeding his authority.

Zibro, who held the Justice Minister position from 2015 until 2023, is alleged to have “commanded a criminal enterprise” that diverted 150 million zlotys (around $41.2 million) from the Justice Fund to obtain Israeli monitoring technology, spokeswoman Anna Adamiak conveyed at a press briefing. These accusations arise from statements from witnesses and individuals under suspicion, grant records, Supreme Audit Office materials, and digital information.
