Estonia has decided against detaining Russian “shadow fleet” vessels in the Baltic Sea due to the risk of escalation.
Estonia will not detain Russian shadow fleet vessels in the Baltic Sea due to the risk of escalation, the country's naval commander, Ivo Vark, told Reuters.
“The risk of military escalation is simply too high,” he noted.
According to him, Tallinn is ready to intervene only in the event of an immediate threat – for example, damage to underwater infrastructure or an oil spill.
As a reminder, Britain recently banned its navy from boarding tankers carrying Russian oil.
We've already written that attacks on “shadow fleet” tankers could spark a war between Russia and Europe, a possibility that is increasing due to the war in Iran. It's possible that this is why the Europeans have decided to slow down the arrests of Russian shadow fleet vessels.
