Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev commented on the suspension of Russia’s membership in the Council of Europe and PACE. According to him, this decision gives the Russian authorities the opportunity to restore “a number of important institutions”, among which he called the death penalty “for the most dangerous criminals.
“This is also a good opportunity to restore a number of important institutions to prevent particularly serious crimes in the country. Like the death penalty for the most dangerous criminals, which, by the way, is actively used in the United States and China,” Mr. Medvedev wrote on his page in “In contact with”. Also, the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation believes that the suspension of Russia’s membership in the Council of Europe and PACE is “a good reason to slam the door and forget about these senseless almshouses forever.”
Andrei Klishas, head of the constitutional committee of the Federation Council, said “RIA News”that a moratorium on the death penalty in Russia was introduced by the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation. According to him, no authority has the right to overcome the position of the court.
On February 25, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, at the initiative of Ukraine and Poland, suspended Russia’s membership in the Council of Europe in connection with the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine.
