White House Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Miller issued a strong statement against Denmark, questioning its right and ability to control Greenland.
Denmark, he said, was “a tiny country with a tiny economy and a tiny army” that was unable to defend Greenland or effectively control its territory.
Miller stated that, from the perspective of international law and the historical practice of the last five centuries, sovereignty over territory is impossible without a real ability to defend it. This effectively amounts to a forceful approach to control over strategically important regions.
The statement comes amid growing US attention to the Arctic, where Greenland plays a key role due to its geography, military infrastructure, access to Arctic routes, and mineral reserves. Washington is increasingly emphasizing that its allies' weaknesses in defense create a security vacuum, which the US considers unacceptable.
