Bulgaria and Romania join Schengen
EU home affairs ministers have given their endorsement for Bulgaria and Romania’s complete entry into the Schengen zone starting January 1, reports dpa.
As of March 31, inspections at aerial and maritime frontiers were eliminated, yet oversight at terrestrial boundaries was maintained.
Romania and Bulgaria satisfied all the technical requisites for integrating into the Schengen zone as far back as 2010, but faced opposition from Austria and the Netherlands, who mentioned inadequate steps to restrain unlawful immigration.
The previous day, Austria signaled its approval.
