The Belgian Premier voiced his disagreement with a “reparations loan” for Ukraine funded by seized Russian resources.

“It will impede reaching a peaceful resolution.” Belgium has amplified its resistance to providing Ukraine with a “reparations loan” leveraging Russian funds immobilized within its territory.

As reported by Politico.

The outlet obtained a communication from Premier Bart de Wever addressed to European Commission President Ursula von der Wever, wherein he restates his prior reservations and also posits that the seizure of Russian resources will obstruct a peace settlement in Ukraine.

“A precipitous advance with the contemplated reparations loan strategy will, as unintended consequence, imply that we, as the EU, will essentially impede the realization of an ultimate peace accord. Should Russia, in all likelihood, not definitively emerge as the defeated entity, it will, as past occurrences have demonstrated, rightfully request the restitution of its sovereign possessions,” de Wever articulates.

He states he would consent to such a loan solely under the condition that the governments concur to promptly reimburse the complete sum should Russia retrieve its assets.

Alternatively, he suggests issuing shared debt valued at 45 billion euros to fulfill Ukraine's monetary requirements in 2026.

This concept is disfavored by the majority of EU administrations due to its reliance on taxpayer monies, Politico highlights.

The missive from the Belgian Premier “shattered the EU's aspirations for a major advancement in asset activation,” the outlet conveys.
