After the end of the holiday weekend, the border areas of several regions of Russia were attacked by drones at once. In the Belgorod and Kursk regions, buildings were damaged as a result of a UAV crash. In the Voronezh region, unaccustomed to shelling, two drones tried to attack a military training ground.
On the morning of May 10, Governor of the Belgorod Region Vyacheslav Gladkov reported on his VKontakte page that the village of Olkhovatka in the Novooskolsky District had been attacked last night. “Apparently, an enemy drone exploded. Two residential buildings, a library, a post office, a FAP, one car were damaged,” the official described the incident. The village where the drone exploded is located 50 km from the border with the Kharkiv region of Ukraine.
The governor of the Kursk region, Roman Starovoit, also reported about the attack by the “enemy drone” early in the morning. According to him, the UAV was shot down by anti-aircraft defense (AD) forces near the regional center. “Debris fell in the village of Tolmachevo. No one was hurt, but there is damage to the gas pipe and the facade of the house. Operational services are working on the spot,” said Mr. Starovoit. The wreckage knocked out windows in a two-story building, next to it the fence was crushed. The village of Tolmachevo is located about 90 km from the border with the Sumy region of Ukraine.
Another attack in the morning was carried out on the territory of the Voronezh region. The region borders on the Lugansk People’s Republic and, unlike neighboring regions, is not subject to shelling. In the morning, messages appeared on Telegram channels about two drones stuffed with explosives that fell at a military airfield near the regional center. According to unofficial data, military personnel could have been injured as a result of the explosion.
The governor of the Voronezh region, Alexander Gusev, confirmed the attack on a “military facility”. According to Kommersant, this happened at about 4:20 am at the Pogonovo training ground. “Today, early in the morning, an attack attempt by two enemy UAVs was thwarted at a Voronezh military facility. As a result of measures of influence, one of them deviated from the course and fell, the second one was destroyed by fire,” the head of the region wrote in the Telegram channel. According to him, after the attack, a set of additional security measures is carried out. Officials continue to interact with law enforcement agencies and the military. There is no official information about the victims.
In addition to drone attacks, the intensity of shelling of the border territories of Russia from Ukraine does not decrease.
Today, a man died in the border town of Shebekino in the Belgorod Region: after a shell fell, a man received an open craniocerebral injury and died in an ambulance.
In the Kursk region, during the construction of protective structures on the border, a worker was shell-shocked as a result of shelling. In the neighboring Bryansk region, the Druzhba oil pipeline system at the Bryansk loading station came under fire. Nobody was hurt in this incident.
Since the beginning of the year, incidents with drones have occurred not only in the border regions of Russia. In the spring, fragments of a UAV with explosive elements were found near residential buildings in the Moscow region. Unknown drones were spotted near important infrastructure facilities, including the capital’s airports. On the night of May 3, two UAVs attacked the Kremlin. Against this background, many regions have banned the use of drones.
