Alfred Koch: Putin can't be trusted
Here’s how it will likely pan out: No one in Donbas will surrender their weapons, naturally. At the very least, not most of the fighters. Because they are fully aware of their actions: they have spilled blood, there are numerous eyewitnesses, and there exist recordings and images (and often, much like in Chechnya, they captured plenty themselves)… While they were reveling, they were either inebriated, high, or convinced (or were they persuaded?) that Russia would support them, that it was poised to send in forces, that all they needed to do was initiate, and then there would be columns of armored vehicles from the east, and so forth. So they prematurely celebrated triumph, sending images on their devices to all of their acquaintances: look at the hero I am! It’s all a jest, no doubt…
Russia (not for the first occasion) – predictably deceived them. I recall a parallel account involving the volunteers who assaulted Grozny in the autumn of 1994. They were similarly told: just enter, just commence, and we'll be present to assist you! There will be consequences! And – they deceived them…
The Czechs then executed and shot a great number of those very same volunteers… But the forces remained stationary, stood their ground, turned around, and departed… They only came back on New Year’s Eve. By then, the operation was being conducted not by the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (Yerin), but by the Ministry of Defense (Pasha Grachev).
And before that, everyone in Afghanistan who sided with the USSR was left behind. The Taliban executed them all by hanging. Including Babrak Karmal and his entire family… And those Afghans who succeeded in fleeing to Russia are still being victimized and denied citizenship or the right to reside…
Poroshenko will position his army along the boundary. He will blockade it and eliminate all the rebel militias once the truce concludes (immediately after the upcoming weekend). To the sneers of the local populace, they will detest them for the ruination and loss, while they will admire Poroshenko: nicely done, strong person, he reestablished order and prevailed!
