The Second Western District Military Court in Moscow sentenced a native of Chechnya Zelimkhan Mazaev for “inducing, recruiting or involving a person into committing crimes of a terrorist nature” (part 1 of article 205.1 of the Criminal Code) to eight years in prison, Kommersant writes, citing sources.

According to the verdict, Mazaev paid for the militant’s trip to Syria in April 2014, and in January 2015 attacked private collectorsto take their bags. The latter contained only documents. Mazaev was sentenced under Art. 162 and 161 of the Criminal Code (robbery and robbery) to three years and nine months in prison. At that time, it was not known about his complicity in terrorism, so the military court combined the three crimes and sentenced all episodes at once, the newspaper writes.

From eight years, by a court decision, the term served by Mazaev in a colony and another year for the time spent in a pre-trial detention center in a terrorist case will be deducted. Thus, he received less than four years in prison and may soon apply to the court for a request for parole.

Mazaev’s lawyer spoke about his intention to appeal the verdict. The defense will seek the full acquittal of the convict, since the prosecution was based on the testimony of a witness with drug addiction, lawyer Anton Kolosov noted.
