TV presenter and former HSE professor Alexander Arkhangelsky wrote about his death on Facebook (owned by Meta – the company is recognized as extremist and banned in Russia). This was later reported by the former editor-in-chief of Ekho Moskvy, Alexei Venediktov (included by the Ministry of Justice in the list of foreign agents). Yasin was the first mentor of the head of the Central Bank, Elvira Nabiullina.
“Evgeniy Grigorievich Yasin has left. Farewell, my dear,” Venediktov wrote in his telegram channel.
On August 28, the Mash telegram channel reported that 89-year-old Yasin was taken to intensive care in serious condition, he had cerebral edema and heart problems.

Doctor of Economic Sciences and Professor Evgeniy Yasin was born on May 7, 1934 in Odessa. In 1957 he graduated from the Odessa Hydrotechnical Institute, and in 1963 from the Faculty of Economics of Moscow State University.
From 1973 to 1989, he headed the laboratory of the Central Economics and Mathematics Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1989, he headed a department in the State Commission of the USSR Council of Ministers for Economic Reform. In 1991, he created an Expert Institute under the Scientific-Industrial Union of the USSR (now the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs), which he headed.
From 1994 to 1997 he served as Minister of Economy in the government of Viktor Chernomyrdin. From March 1997 to March 1998, he was minister without portfolio under Chernomyrdin, responsible for the economic bloc. After Chernomyrdin’s resignation, he continued to serve as minister. Left the government in the summer of 1998. From October 1998 to June 2021, he was the scientific director of the Higher School of Economics, and since July 2021, its honorary scientific director. RBC then wrote that Yasin asked to be relieved of his position as scientific director for health reasons; he was replaced by one of the founders of HSE and rector Yaroslav Kuzminov.
Yasin was one of the ideologists of the reforms of the early 1990s, an ally of Yegor Gaidar and Anatoly Chubais. Participated in the development of the “500 days” program for the transition of the planned economy of the Soviet Union to a market economy. It was not implemented.
