Former USSR Prime Minister Ryzhkov explained his departure from the Federation Council
The former Prime Minister of the USSR, the oldest senator, Nikolai Ryzhkov, explained his resignation from the post of representative of the executive power of the Belgorod region in the Federation Council by age.
The fact that Ryzhkov left the Federation Council became known on October 3. The speaker of the upper house of parliament, Valentina Matvienko, signed a corresponding resolution – it follows from it that Ryzhkov’s powers were terminated ahead of schedule on September 25.
“I looked at my passport and said, ‘Enough is enough,’” the former senator said.
Nikolai Ryzhkov is 94 years old. He served as senator from the Belgorod region since 2003. Ryzhkov was Chairman of the USSR Council of Ministers from 1985 to January 14, 1991. He was supposed to take part in the first and only presidential elections of the USSR in March 1990 – his candidacy was submitted by people’s deputy from the Latvian SSR Viktor Alksnis. However, during discussions at the Third Congress of People’s Deputies, Ryzhkov and another candidate Vadim Bakatin withdrew their candidacies, leaving only Mikhail Gorbachev on the voting list.
