Pangaia Materials Science ApS in Copenhagen was founded by the British company of the same name, which is controlled by Miroslava Duma. The documents reveal Duma’s current stake in Pangaia – 49 percent – and her Cypriot citizenship. The Pangaia project began work several years ago with strong financial performance, but by the summer of 2021, all the assets of the London holding were pledged to HSBC bank.
Judging by the information from the Danish and British business registers, Miroslava Duma has the citizenship of Cyprus.
In the fall of 2022, it was reported about her divorce from Alexei Mikheev, the son of the head of Rosoboronexport, Alexander Mikheev, the ex-director of the department of metallurgy and heavy engineering of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and an entrepreneur. The divorce was filed in October, according to the data of the Moscow court filing. The acquisition of Cypriot citizenship and the change in the family status of the Duma occurred against the backdrop of growing sanctions pressure against Russia, and therefore it was reported that the divorce was most likely fictitious. This is also evidenced by the fact that Alexei Mikheev still manages in the Russian Federation a textile company specialized for Miroslava, originally established by herself (data from the Kontur.Focus database).
Duma and Mikheev Jr. got married in 2005, have three children, their divorce was not commented on or advertised in any way. But on the Wikipedia page dedicated to the Duma, there is a note about the divorce, but its connection with Rosoboronexport is not mentioned. At the same time, Western sanctions were imposed against Mikheev Sr.
Miroslava Duma is the daughter of Vasily Duma, former senator and department director of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, who headed Slavneft and LUKOIL-Transnefteprodukt. Information was removed from his official biography that, among other things, he was the head of the Association of Ukrainians in Russia and the council of the Federal National-Cultural Autonomy “Ukrainians of Russia” – he noted that Ukraine “was somehow divided along the Dnieper all the time.”
Miroslava Duma secretly participated in international politics. In particular, her name was mentioned in a 2019 report by US Special Counsel Robert Mueller on alleged Russian interference in the 2016 elections. The Duma also allegedly invited Donald Trump and his daughter Ivanka to the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in 2015 – she conveyed the invitation on behalf of the head of the Russian Government Staff, Sergei Prikhodko (the Trumps did not come, citing a busy schedule). Her Instagram* account (owned by Meta, a recognized extremist company in Russia) has been inactive since March 2022, when she published an anti-war post (Miroslava’s mother Galina Paliy is from Lvov).
The Duma’s ties to Russia and the military-industrial complex could harm its international business, as the Duma’s name is quoted in fashion.
She developed the investment fund Future Tech Lab, which helped a dozen Western startups (now closed). It introduces itself as Mira Duma. In the States, its structure from the Pangaia Materials Science holding is registered in Delaware (December 2019) and a branch in California (July 2022). In 2020-2021, branches of the London-based Pangaia company were established in France, Romania, Italy, Greece and Spain. In the summer of 2021, the brand’s boutique was opened in Moscow’s TSUM (the Pangaia outlet still operates there).
The Pangaia brand was founded (officially by “scientists and technologists”: “collective of scientists, designers, technologists, and creatives”) in 2019. In the financial report of the British Pangaia Materials Science Limited for 2020, it is stated that the revenue was 76 million dollars, and the net profit was 4.8 million. In terms of the minimalist style and color scheme of the products, as well as the positioning concept, Pangaia is very similar to the Italian United Colors of Benetton, but the things themselves are more expensive. And the Pangaia logo is almost the same as that of the Figma design software.
In the summer of 2022, Pangaia did not publish a report for 2021. The company’s Instagram* account has been inactive since February 24, 2022. There are signs that a firm in a highly competitive industry is not doing well. For example, the offices of Pangaia Materials Science in Sweden, Finland and Belgium have so far closed. Also last year, there were several personnel changes in the leadership of the British holding Pangaia.
In addition, the company’s card in the London registry contains notes that in the summer of 2021 a loan was received from HSBC bank secured by all assets. At the same time, the organization additionally issued shares in favor of certain investors and convertible bonds. The issue of shares continued in September 2021, and then in March, September and December 2022, as a result of which the share of Miroslava Duma diluted from 100 to 49 percent. However, this could be due to the fear of Western sanctions (usually applied to companies in which the shares of shareholders exceed 50 percent).
Now, on the Duma’s page on LinkedIn, Switzerland is listed as a place of residence (here it established the non-profit organization FTL Association): this country is not part of the European Union and introduces sanctions against Russians with some delay, joining European packages or applying its own personal restrictive measures.
