Luxembourg businessman Patrick Hansen, one of the authors of the lawsuit that resulted in the closure of beneficial ownership registers in the European Union, turned out to be the owner or director of 117 companies registered around the world, including in well-known offshore havens. This conclusion was reached by OCCRP in a joint investigation with Reporter.lu, Paper Trail Media and other publications. The interviewed experts believe that this may be a sign of nominal ownership of the business. Many of the companies that Hansen ran had Russian owners, among them the family of a United Russia deputy. These same Russians provided multi-million dollar loans to Hansen’s companies. Patrick Hansen was one of the plaintiffs alleging that EU anti-money laundering rules requiring all companies to publicly disclose information about their owners jeopardize his security.
